When IRG was built, we worked hard to utilize reclaimed materials in the creation of the gym interior. Much of the 20,000 lbs. of steel supporting the climbing walls was reclaimed, as well as a percentage of the climbing holds. We were also able to re-purpose the materials that were removed in the demolition stage and use them to build the gym’s office and dressing rooms.
Part-Time Youth Program Staff
We are currently hiring part-time instructors for our Youth Programs. The right fit will be a responsible, reliable, and fun individual with the ability to manage kids ages 4 through 12 and help cultivate the next generation of climbers.
- Instruct various youth classes (after school clubs, belay session, private lessons, and school break camps).
- Engage in youth behavior management and re-direction in a positive manner.
- Communicate effectively with youth, parents, co-workers, and gym members.
- Be a positive ambassador of IRG Youth Programs to the wider community.
- Must be physically able to belay other people, at length, and climb at a moderate level.
- 16 years of age or older.
- Previous experience working as an instructor, teacher, camp counselor, or similar position working with youth.
- Must be friendly, professional, open, and respectful.
- Fun-loving person who understands the nuances of working with youth.
- Able to maintain a keen focus on safety, first, while still creating a fun environment.
Front Desk Staff (with opportunity for additional roles and responsibilities)
We are currently hiring for part-time or full-time Front-Desk Staff. The right person will be a responsible, reliable, and fun individual with customer service experience who is self-motivated to monitor both customer safety and general gym maintenance and cleanliness. Potential growth opportunities include Facility Maintenance, Youth Program Coordination, Communications, and Adult Program Design.
- Overseeing gym safety and enforcing gym rules.
- Handling sales transactions including day use, memberships, retail, and gear rental.
- Monitoring visitor check-in.
- Ensuring every climber who walks into IRG feels welcome and has a positive and respectful experience.
- Performing gym opening and/or closing procedures.
- Must be physically able to belay other people at length and climb at a competent level.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Must be friendly, professional, open, and respectful.
- Fun-loving and likes to engage in conversation with people.
- Desire to share your passion for climbing and adventure with others.
- Desire to teach others.
- Able to maintain a keen focus on safety first, while still creating a fun environment.
- Able to learn and pass belay, lead climbing, and lead belay tests.
- Previous experience working in a commercial or institutional climbing gym.
- Climbing instruction experience preferred (Introduction to Climbing, Top Rope and Lead Belaying, Technical Instruction, etc.).
Head Route Setter
Are you an experienced route setter, able to sling quality routes, efficiently? Can you critique routes to create a great result? Do you enjoy being friends with your co-workers and climbing community? Come set for the West Puget Sound climbing community.
The Head Route Setter at Island Rock Gym is responsible for all facets of route management, including setting routes, managing and developing a team of setters, adjusting route inventory to match customer needs, fore-running, and constantly improving route setting processes and procedures. The Head Setter will work with IRG management to ensure the route setting program meets the goals and objectives of the gym and the needs of our members. Our expectation is to deliver fun, high-quality routes to customers across all grades. This position requires leadership skills, passion for climbing, passion for plastic, and the desire to set for climbers of all levels.
- Oversee and participate in setting fun and interesting routes and boulder problems, weekly.
- Maintain consistent grades and a high bar for all routes in the gym by fore-running, providing feedback to route setters, and making adjustments to routes.
- Establish and maintain the setting schedule to ensure timely turnover.
- Maintain inventory of all routes in gym and collaborate with gym management to determine when route curve adjustments are required.
- Ensure setting team knows and uses best industry practices for working at height and updating safety practices, as needed.
- Manage annual setting budget and purchasing of climbing holds and setting equipment.
- Regularly inspect climbing hardware to ensure it meets safety standards.
- Communicate facility needs to management and facility manager.
- Organize hold storage room and setting gear to maximize safety and efficiency.
- Staff Growth and Development
- Manage route setting team including hiring, training, and providing feedback.
- Continuously seek opportunities to develop personal setting and leadership skills.
- Provide consistent, regular, and proactive training to grow the setting teams’ skills and abilities.
- 3+ years route setting experience, 5+ years climbing experience.
- Experience in an established setting program with extensive knowledge of fore-running and route setter training methods.
- Strong communication skills to professionally interact with IRG management, setters,and customers.
- Experience developing other setters by critiquing routes and providing collaborative feedback.
- Able to work 20+ hours/week in a physical capacity; climbing, setting, and fore-running.
- Able to climb 5.12+/v8.
- Willing to work outside normal business hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Prior leadership/management experience, preferred.
- USAC Setting Level II cert. preferred.
- USAC Local/Regional competition setting experience, preferred.
- Compensation dependent on experience.
