Head Route Setter

The Head Route Setter (HRS) is responsible for all facets of routesetting, including setting routes and boulders, managing and developing setters, maintaining and adjusting route inventory to match customer needs, fore-running, and improving the route setting department’s equipment and procedures. The HRS will work with IRG management to ensure the route setting program meets the gym’s goals and members’ needs. The HRS will deliver fun, high-quality routes to customers across all ability levels. This position requires leadership, independence, passion for climbing, passion for plastic, and a desire to set for all levels of climbing.

Note: This is a part-time position with opportunities for full-time hours with the addition of Front Desk, Coaching, Facility Maintenance, and more (dependent on experience).


  • Set routes and boulder problems, weekly
  • Create a fun, safe, and challenging climbing experience for every ability level and body type
  • Maintain consistent grades
  • Forerun or schedule forerunning for quality assurance
  • Write the setting schedule
  • Maintain inventory and turnover
  • With gym management, ensure route curve matches customer needs
  • Communicate with Program Coordinators to maintain routes for youth and other programming
  • Safety and the use of best industry practices for working at height
  • Regularly inspect setting hardware
  • Monitor general wall maintenance and communicate needs to Facility Coordinator
  • Ensure all holds are tightened and set screwed (as needed) before walls open to the public
  • Maintain a clean and orderly Hold Room
  • Manage route setting team including hiring, training, and development
  • Continuously seek opportunities to develop personal setting and leadership skills


  • 3+ years route setting experience
  • 5+ years climbing experience
  • Rope system knowledge (safety, haul systems, work at height, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience mentoring other setters by critiquing routes and providing constructive feedback
  • Able to work 20+ hours/week in a physical capacity; climbing, setting, and fore-running
  • Willing to work outside normal business hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends around competitions and gym events

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an established setting program
  • Prior leadership/management experience
  • USAC Level II Setter Certification
  • Experience setting USAC Local and Championship competitions
  • Climb 5.12 / V8
